Historic Mediterranean sea port

You can get an overview of the city from the park which surrounds the ruins of the Castillo de la Concepcion, the castle of Cartagena.
The town hall, marks the end of the Calle Mayor, a street overlooked by balconies and lined with handsome buildings. Excavations in the city include a Roman street and the Muralla Bizantina (Byzantine Wall), built between 589 and 590.

Constructed in 223 BC by the Carthaginians, who called it Quart Hadas (The first settlement founded in the natural harbour of Cartagena was New City). After conquering the city in 209 BC the Romans called it Carthago Nova (New Carthage) Although the city declined in importance in the middle ages, its prestige increased in the 18th century when it became a major naval base.

The city of Cartagena is situated in the south east region of the Autonomous Community of the region of Murcia, with an approximate population of 195,000 inhabitants; occupying an area of 558.3 km². The Annual average temperature is a mild 20º centigrade with the temperature in the winter very seldom falling below 12º.

Isaac Peral designed submarine at Cartagena

Isaac Peral submarine

(Cartagena, July 1, 1851 – May 22, 1895, Berlin), was a Spanish scientist, sailor and inventor of the Peral Submarine (built 1884, launched 1888). Intended for military use, this submarine pioneered new designs in the hull, control systems and air systems, proving a success in two years of trials. Its proven ability to fire torpedoes under water and maintain full propulsive power and control underwater has led it to being described by some as the first U-boat.
